Here are some steps to help with relationship breakdowns and parenting teens:
1. Listen Actively and Respect Their Privacy:
Give your teenager your full attention when they’re speaking. Avoid interrupting and show empathy towards their feelings and thoughts. Allow your teenager their own space and boundaries while letting them know you are there for support whenever needed.
2. Be Honest, Open and Encouraging:
Share your own experiences and feelings when appropriate. This creates a more open and trusting communication channel. Focus on their strengths and offer praise when deserved. A positive reinforcement approach fosters better communication and mutual respect.
3. Spend Quality 1:1 Time Together:
Engage in activities that your teenager enjoys. This can help bridge gaps and build a stronger connection. Show an interest in what they are doing, even if you are not familiar with the activity. Do not take rejection personally, it may be strange for them if time together is something new, keep trying.
4. Model Positive Behaviour:
Demonstrate resilience and positive coping mechanisms in your own life. Teenagers often learn by observing their parents’ reactions to stress and adversity. Get mindful of your communicate with them and especially during challenging conversations.
5. Practice Self-awareness:
Regularly reflect on your emotions and triggers. Understanding your own emotional responses can help you remain calm and composed when interacting with your teenager. Use techniques such as deep breathing or mindfulness to manage your emotions, especially during challenging conversations with your teen.
